Chris McCarthy is a director at ThompsonMcMullan, PC, and has been practicing in the field of Elder Law since 1999. Chris focuses his practice in the following areas: Estate Planning; Estate and Trust Administration; Disability and Special Needs Planning; Medicaid Planning and Long-Term Care Planning; Guardianships and Conservatorships for incapacitated adults; and Fiduciary services.
Chris received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University in 1992 and his law degree from the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law in 1999. Prior to law school, he served as an Armor officer in the United States Army, with active duty assignments in Germany and Washington.
Chris is the first attorney in Central Virginia to become a Certified Elder Law Attorney, certified through the National Elder Law Foundation, the only organization accredited by the American Bar Association to offer certification in the area of elder law. He is Past President of the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, a Past Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Virginia Bar Association, member of the Council of Advanced Practitioners of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, a member of the Academy of Special Needs Planners, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Virginia Center on Aging. An AV-rated attorney, Mr. McCarthy is also an accredited attorney for the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of claims for veterans' benefits before the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Mr. McCarthy was selected by Virginia Lawyers Weekly as one of Virginia’s Leaders in the Law in 2011. He was also recognized in 2011-2015 in Virginia Super Lawyers in the Elder Law practice area and was selected for Virginia Rising Stars in Elder Law in 2008-2010.
Chris is a frequent continuing legal education lecturer for organizations such as Virginia CLE and the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and also speaks frequently to nonprofit groups and organizations, health care professionals and the general public on estate planning, Medicaid planning, veterans disability pension (“Aid and Attendance”) benefits, and the legal concerns of the elderly and disabled.
